Women get naked for PETA

Two young women showered, apparently naked behind a modesty screen, at noon Friday at S. Kansas Avenue and 8th in downtown Topeka to publicize the position of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals that eating meat causes water shortages.

Virginia Fort, a full-time PETA employee, and Lauren Quillo, a University of Missouri student who volunteers for PETA, were shielded by a banner that read, "1 lb. of Meat equals 6 months of Showers."

Fort, who made an appearance in Topeka earlier in the year, said the Natural Resources Defense Council has determined that water use in Kansas already exceeds the supply.

PETA is known for using unclothed women in its advertising and live events to attract attention to its message that people should stop eating meat because doing so is cruel to animals and causes health and environmental problems.

Before the demonstration, Fort drew a chalk circle on the sidewalk around the shower booth and asked people to stay behind the line.

At one point, they had an encounter with Topekan Don Palmer, who accused PETA of hypocrisy. He said the website PETAkillsanimals.com has presented evidence it says shows PETA itself is cruel to animals. Fort politely asked to have a discussion with Palmer. She refuted some of the statements from the website, which seemed to mollify him at least partly.

"The rebuttals you have through the news media have been real weak," he said.

Naked Protest - Pamplona 2004

Since 2002 the organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has staged a protest the d ay before the San fermin festival in Pamplona, Spain. In a mockery of the world famous spectacle of fighting Bulls chasing crowds of runners, semi nude animal rights activist are running through town following the same route. Under the slogan "Join the Human Race" PETA is trying to draw attention to the plight of the bulls, who after the run are killed the same evening in the Bullfighting arena. Reactions from the people of Pamplona are mixed, from anger to amusement at the spectacle. The Naked Run is becoming part of the festival and thousands of spectators line the route to cheer or heckle the demonstrators, depending on their own opinions on the subject. Bentrok Penentang dan Pendukung Hosni Mubarak Akal-Akalan Politik Sang Diktator (Full Pictures)

Di tengah aksi demonstrasi besar-besaran menentang pemerintahan Hosni Mubarak. Tiba-tiba publik dikejutkan  dengan munculnya ratusan pendukung Hosni Mubarak. Bentrokan pun tidak dapat terelakan. Dilindungi aparat keamanan para pendukung Hosni Mubarak merangsek masuk ke arah ribuan demonstran dan menembus barikade. Dengan memegang pentungan dan beberapa diantaranya bahkan menunggangi kuda terlihat jelas bahwa mereka adalah bukan masyarakat biasa. Beberapa orang pendukung Mubarak yang terjebak di antara kerumunan masa terlihat dipukuli para demonstran secara beramai-ramai. Setelah digeledah didapat kartu tanda aparat keamanan yang terdapat di saku celana mereka. Hal ini mengingatkan kita pada peristiwa beberapa tahun silam saat terjadi demonstrasi besar-besaran di Indonesia, saat itu ribuan pendukung Mr "X" juga tiba-tiba muncul dengan puluhan truk dan bus ke Jakarta. 

 Para pendukung Hosni Mubarak bersenjata pentungan dan berkuda. Sangat terlatih......akal-akalan politik, agar tidak disorot dunia internasional karena menggunakan aparat keamanan atau militer dalam membubarkan demonstrasi.

Code Pink Naked Protest Woman

I really admire these women, who really and truly put themselves on the line all the time:

HOUSTON (KTRK) — Activists staged a nearly naked protest to bring attention to the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
Dozens of Codepink activisits, in a women-led, women-initiated action, took their message to the public in front of the BP headquarters on Westlake Park Boulevard just before noon Monday.
The women posed nearly naked, dripping with ‘oil’ and dragging nets of fish.
The protesters mourned the deaths of the 11 workers and devastation of wildlife and livelihoods all along the Gulf Coast..
“At the BP headquarters we will put our bodies on the line to hold BP accountable for the rape and plunder of our planet,” says Diane Wilson, a fourth generation fisherwoman from the Gulf who joined the protest. “We call for stripping BP of its corporate charter and seizing its assets to pay the victims, clean up the Gulf and try to restore the devastated wildlife.”

Protest, Nudity and Music

Ultimately, protest is all about drawing attention to a cause and communicating its message to anyone who will listen. As such, there are about as many different methods of protest as there are ways to grab someone's attention. Sure, it's hard to ignore a thousand sign-waving activists, but the same can be said for two naked women holding an animal rights b­anner.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals have earned quite a reputation for eye-catching methods of protesting social, political and industrial policies. Aside from nudity, the organization's members have also used costumes, fake blood, animal carcasses and intentionally unsettling takes on commercial ad campaigns designed to draw attention to their cause.

Shock and spectacle play frequent roles in protest. Pro-life activists wave photos of bloody fetuses in front of abortion clinics. In recent years, antiwar and antiglobalization protesters have favored carnival-like parades of puppets and effigies. In our media-obsessed age, a shocking or alluring image can circulate around the globe in a heartbeat. You might not have had an opinion on foxhunting in the United Kingdom, but you might click on an image of or topless protester in body paint.

The turbulent 1960s saw the explosion of popular protest music from the likes of Phil Ochs, Bob Dylan and Joan Baez. John Lennon, not content to merely sing for peace, staged a two-week "bed-in" against the Vietnam War. While protest music certainly enjoyed a resurgence at the time, it was far from new. Protest music has played a role in the women's suffrage movement of the 1800s in England and the American Revolution of the 1700s, and had been used to rally supporters behind social, religious and nationalist causes for centuries.

There are a lot of reasons to be mad as hell at BP right now --- the multimillion-gallon body of oil still covering a huge swath of the Gulf of Mexico is just one of them. Well, the women of the activist group CODEPINK have decided to protest the oil giant's actions in a particularly attention-grabbing manner: by getting naked. Here are some photos from the group's demonstration in Houston, Texas at BP's headquarters. Be forewarned: some of the following images may be offensive to some, and may be NSFW.

In the words of CODEPINK co-founder Diane Wilson, the goal of the protest was to "Expose BP. Expose that Drill, Baby, Drill means Spill, Baby, Spill. After all, what's at stake is nothing less than our planet. And that's the naked truth."

I'm a little surprised they beat PETA to the punch on this one, but CODEPINK may be the first group to stage a naked protest against the oil spill. The campaign, called Expose the Naked Truth About BP's Oil Spill Catastrophe, took place last Monday.






Medea Benjamin has a full account of the day's protest at the Huffington Post Green. An excerpt from her story:

The action was superb. About 100 people showed up from all over Texas and six other states--including California. Some people wore pasties that said "No BP", some dressed as fishermen, oily birds and fish. Diane put on her white rubber fishing boots, smeared herself with oil and wore a sandwich board that read "Expose BP's Obscene Side."

Two imposter oil workers in BP uniforms doused the group with fake oil, causing the birds and fish to recoil and die on the sidewalk. The police and BP security stood by watching, as nice as could be. It was obvious that BP higher ups had the good sense to tell them that arresting protesters would not help their image.

Hundreds of naked women arrested...

Some 600 liberian refugees who have refused to stop their protests have been arrested by the Ghana police. They are demanding to be resettled in the United States as well as an amount of US$1000 instead of US$100 from the UN refugee agency HCR.

"$100 is not anything you can start life with. We are all lost," said a liberian refugee.

Hundreds of women held naked roadside protests on Monday to express their unwillingness to integrate into the Ghanaian society.

The police rounded up the protesters before sending them to a vocational centre about 50 kilometres away from the capital in ten buses, according to witnesses. Interior Minister Kwamena Bartels denied it was forced repatriation.

"When women strip themselves naked and stand by a major highway, that is not a peaceful demonstration," Mr.. Bartels said in an interview with BBC.

Last week, the Ghanaian government asked the Liberian refugees to abide by the laws of the country by channeling their grievances through appropriate relevant authorities for redress.

Kwamena Bartels said in a statement that they should not overstretch the goodwill and protection the government and people of Ghana has accorded them over the past 18 years, also stating that the demonstration is in breach of the Public Order Act of 1994  and urged them to comport themselves.

Some protesters forced the closure of all the schools on the refugee camp while blocking the distribution of aid materials to children, sick people and older persons.

Some 27,000 Liberians are in Ghana after years of conflict at home.

Women Protest Naked; Eight Shot in Renewed Inter-Ethnic Crisis in Nigeria

WOMEN of Obodogugu-Ogume community in Ndokwa area of Delta State protested naked, yesterday, while no fewer than eight persons, including a policeman have been shot by armed youths in a renewed orgy of violence between the community and the people of Emu-Ebendo over negotiations with an oil company.

Also yesterday, mobile policemen took over strategic areas in Effurun on the directive of the Inspector General of Police following reports of increased criminality in Uvwie local government area.

Berliners Go Naked to Protest Gentrification...

A group of Berliners, angered by rising rents in Germany's capital city, are calling attention to their cause in a way sure to shock: by stripping naked, reports AOL News.

The protestors, several groups under the umbrella organization, Hedonist International, use guerilla tactics to promote their frustrations, infiltrating apartment viewings as prospective renters. Once inside the overpriced flat, they put on plastic masks, take their clothes off to reveal slogans painted on their bodies like, "Too Expensive" and "Rip Off", blast techno music and dance--fleeing before the police arrive.

A video of their protest usually appears on the Internet the following day.

Their reason for going in the buff?

"Berliners don't have a lot of purchasing power - some people have to pay so much rent that they can no longer afford clothes," reads the group's website. "That's why on Sun., Sept. 26, we went to another flat viewing in Kreuzberg without a stitch on. Although the apartment passed our party test, we were pissed about the rent of 11,50 euros per square meter - that's excluding utilities and heating costs. Trying to find someone stupid enough to pay that price borders on illicit profiteering ."

The group admits to being inspired by anti-rent activists in Paris and Hamburg who have held similar demonstrations against increasing rents.

While the city is still considered less expensive than other global metropolises like New York, London or Tokyo, rents have increased in recent years, leaving a shortage of affordable housing. Trendy neighborhoods like Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg -- once popular for cheap housing with immigrants, students and artists -- are becoming more expensive as gentrification increases, with housing consultancy Emprica citing a 14 percent rise in rents in the past year.

If anything, their romping around in the nude is more of a nuisance to the apartment viewers and real estate agents than a way to stop increasing rents.

"I don't go to an apartment viewing to see cocks," one prospective renter told German news website, The Local.

"We want to shock in order to get our political message across," one of the protestors told German magazine Der Spiegel.

Protesting naked is a popular protest shock method of choice for demonstrators, with one woman recently stripping nude to protest TSA pat-downs, a group of cyclists going naked to demonstrate car culture in Peru  and Brazilian students donning their birthday suits in support of a schoolmate who was expelled for wearing a mini dress.

Berawal ketika terjadi demonstrasi anak-anak muda di Bastille Prancis, sekelompok anak muda melempari polisi anti huru hara dengan beberapa buah botol. Tanpa diduga seorang wanita muda pendemo tiba-tiba berdiri di antara polisi dan demonstran lainnya sambil membuka baju. Akibatnya demonstran pria yang sebelumnya telah liar secara beramai-ramai melecehkan wanita ini tanpa ampun. Beberapa orang berusaha menolong. Saat wanita ini berhasil lolos dari para demonstran, wanita ini  justru tertabrak rombongan polisi anti huru hara yang mengejar para demonstran. SEOUL, KOMPAS.com - Two female animal rights activists were detained Tuesday for staging a near-naked protest near the heavily-guarded venue of this week’s G20 summit, South Korean police said. The two members of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) staged a brief demonstration outside the Convention and Exhibition Centre in southern Seoul, which is guarded by heavily-armed police and troops.

Female police officers took away the pair, who were clad only in underwear in frigid winter weather. They carried placards reading “Save the planet. Go vegetarian”, and painted images representing the earth’s continents on their bodies.

“They are now in custody at a nearby police station for staging an unauthorised protest inside a security zone,” a police spokesman told AFP, adding investigators have yet to bring charges against them.

The two were identified as Canadian activist A. Fruno, 24, and her Korean colleague Han Sae-Mi, 34. Police have banned protests within a two-kilometre (over one mile) radius of the venue for the summit on Thursday and Friday. PETA claims switching to a vegetarian diet is the most effective way to fight climate change and reduce environmental destruction.

“It’s all a bit shocking to be arrested wearing little more than some paint but what the meat industry is doing is far more shocking and detrimental to the planet,” Han said in a statement.

Tolak Penggusuran, Sejumlah Perempuan Buka Baju..!!

Metrotvnews.com, Batam: Pengusuran lahan di areal Bandar Udara Hang Nadim Batam, Kepulauan Riau, Kamis (8/1), ricuh. Sejumlah perempuan yang menolak pembongkaran sempat membuka baju sebagai bentuk protes.
Keributan pecah saat sejumlah petugas berniat memindahkan warga di lahan tersebut. Beberapa warga berupaya melawan puluhan petugas. Bahkan sambil berteriak histeris, sejumlah perempuan membuka baju pakaiannya.
Dianggap menghalangi penggusuran, petugas lalu membubarkan warga secara paksa. Beberapa warga bahkan dibawa ke kantor polisi karena dianggap sengaja menghambat kerja petugas.
Sementara Kepala Satuan Samapta Kepolisian Kota Besar Barelang Komisaris Polisi Guruh menyatakan sebelum penertiban warga sudah tiga kali diberi surat peringatan. Tapi peringatan itu tidak digubris.
